High-Resolution Widesweep Backscatter Ionograms

چکیده
Introduction: High frequency (HF) over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) relies on the refraction of electromagnetic waves by the ionosphere to detect targets at very long ranges, typically more than 500 nmi (see Fig. 1). A fundamental aspect of successful target detection is the selection of an appropriate operating frequency to ensure a large amount of backscatter energy at the desired surveillance range. HF OTHR operates over four octaves of frequency (5 to 30 MHz) and highly variable (spatially and temporally) ionospheric conditions. For

A Genetic Inverse Method of Ionosphericparameter Inversion from Backscatterionograms
The oblique backscatter sounding is a powerful tool for detecting the ionosphere. This paper discusses the inverse problem of the ionospheric parameters by applying the inverse theory, and develops a new inverse method for this problem, trying to get over the difficulties of instability and non-uniqueness. The Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are introduced to established a 2-dimensional ionospheric Ge...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Study of the Effect of Backscatter Materail Thickness on 99mTc Source Response in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography
Introduction SPECT projections are contaminated by scatter radiation, resulting in reduced image contrast and quantitative errors. Backscatter constitutes a major part of the scatter contamination in lower energy windows. The current study is an evaluation of the effect of backscatter material on FWHM and image quality investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. Materials and Methods SIMIND program...
متن کاملLong-range backscatter from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
Acoustic backscatter eturns measured with a vertical source and horizontal receiving array are beamformed and charted to respective scattering sites on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Well-defined patterns of high-level backscatter esembling bottom morphology occur within the direct path and at convergence zone ranges. Measured backscatter is compared with modeled two-way tra...
متن کاملOblique Ionograms Automatic Scaling Algorithm OIASA application to the ionograms recorded by Ebro observatory ionosonde
This is anOp Abstract – The oblique ionograms automatic scaling algorithm (OIASA), developed at the INGV for the identification of trace of oblique ionograms, allows the determination of the maximum usable frequency (MUF) for communication between the transmitter and receiver, automatically rejecting poor quality ionograms. A test of the algorithm using data from a campaign of oblique soundings...
متن کاملBenthic habitat mapping using multibeam sonar
Multibeam sonar (MBS) systems are recognised as one of the most effective tools available to map and characterise the seafloor as they can provide co-located high-resolution bathymetry and acoustic backscatter characteristics from a wide swath across a vessel’s track. While the production of bathymetry maps from MBS is well developed, processing and analysis of MBS backscatter data has not yet ...
